Hypnosis is nothing like what you see in the movies. A dangling pocket watch isn’t needed. There are no commands to “Sleep!” You are awake and in full control of your thoughts and actions while hypnotized—able to hear, speak, move around and think clearly.
Hypnosis is simply a state of focused attention. It is a natural part of normal functioning. In fact, we go into and out of hypnosis throughout the day without even noticing.

Some examples are when you get caught up in the characters and plot line of a movie or a novel, or in the action of a sporting event. Or when you are daydreaming. Or when you are engaged in some activity you greatly enjoy, such as listening to music, or when doing anything that requires close concentration.
Because hypnosis takes your attention away from external realities and toward inner thoughts, feelings and imagery, it represents an opportunity to think about things at a deeper level—to discover connections, strategies and possibilities that you didn’t see before or somehow lost track of. Which is why it is integral to the coaching process.
To put it another way, hypnosis is a means of heightening the way you control and regulate your inner states—the opposite of what many people think it is. Hypnosis enables you to ignore distractions and it enhances your ability to focus with greater clarity on issues that are important to you.
Although I often use a relaxing breathing exercise to help my clients go into hypnosis, most do so spontaneously during the coaching session. But please note that hypnosis is not an end in itself—It is just a means of focusing.
The real power is within you!
